Hosting Webex Inside Your Canvas Course

At Marian University, we have Webex integrated inside Canvas. Every Canvas course has the possibility of adding Webex to it. Here are some useful tutorials to get you started with this.

Hosting Webex Outside of Canvas

It's possible to use Webex at Marian University and not use it with the Canvas integration. This may be appropriate if you are unable to access Canvas for some reason or for staff meetings.

  • Accessing Webex Outside of Canvas - You can access Webex outside of Canvas by going to mu.webex.com. This guide outlines the steps if you need more.
  • Using your Personal Room - Once you login to mu.webex.com, you can use your personal room to host a virtual meeting.
  • Managing Audio/Video Preferences - Audio and video settings are important to manage to ensure you have the right devices selected for the session.
  • Scheduling an Meeting or Interview on Webex - You can use Outlook to schedule a Webex meeting.
  • Joining a Meeting Via an Email Invite - If you get a meeting invitation in your email, you can use it to join your meeting in different ways, like from your computer, mobile device, phone, or video system.
  • Using Webex Teams - Stay in communication with each other using this tool. Good for groups or teams to use the chat feature, file sharing, and more.
  • Using Webex for a Conference Call - It's possible to use Webex for a simple conference call so you can connect with your students or your team via your phones. This method is for phone use only and not for a virtual meeting (it does not include video or screen-sharing).

Using Breakout Sessions with Webex Training Center

It's possible to host a Webex session and use a breakout session feature, which is good for discussions or other activities. Here's the thing....Webex has different types of "hosting centers" that have different features depending on what you want to accomplish. The tutorials above are all focused on what Webex calls their Meeting Center. We focused on this hosting center because it's simple and straightforward to use, accomplishing most user's goals. Another hosting center is called Webex Training Center, which has more features and is a bit more complex. This is what you need to use if you want to use breakout sessions. Here are some useful tutorials on how to get started with the Webex Training Center and breakout sessions:

  • Webex Meeting vs. Training Center Comparison - Review this website to see the difference between the meeting center and the training center to see which one is right for your goals. You must use the training center if you want to use breakout sessions.
